Bloomsday Bruff June 16th 2010

The small town of Bruff in Co. Limerick will celebrate Bloomsday for the second year running. Bloomsday is always celebrated on June 16th. (Joyce’s major work Ulysses is based on the wanderings of Leopold Bloom on June 16th 1904)Last year’s event was a major success and Bloomsday in Bruff is the major Bloomsday celebration in Ireland outside the capital.

There are street events, music, a Joycean Breakfast and a Bloomsday Dinner. This event is supported by The James Joyce Centre Dublin and the personal support of Senator David Norris. many people in the town dress up in costumes typical of 1904.

With horse and carriage traffic in the Main Street, many people in the town dressed up in costumes typical of 1904 and No7 Eccles Street recreated (the home of Leopold Bloom in Ulysses), Mary Harvey (Award winning actress) will start proceedings with a performance based on the works of Joyce.

A capacity crowd will sit down in the renovated Church of Ireland for a Joycean breakfast. A formal dinner is held in the evening. The day finishes with the singing of ’Love’s Old Sweet Song’ one of James Joyce’s favourite songs.

Three short Documentaries on James Joyce will be shown in Bruff on Bloomsday. All films were directed by Alan Gilsenan and made by Yellow Asylum Films for National Library of Ireland. We acknowledge and are most grateful for the help of the James Joyce Centre, Dublin and The National Library of Ireland in making it possible for these films to be shown in Bruff for Bloomsday.

This is a rare opportunity to see these films outside the Jame Joyce Centre Dublin or the National Library. Davin the character in ‘A Portrait of the Artist’ is based on the outstanding Lord Mayor of Limerick George Clancy who was murdered by the Black and Tans in the early 1920s; his homeplace was in Bruff. There are descendants/family of George Clancy in the area to this day .
